Apprentices at Coleg Sir Gâr have been presented with awards at the 2025 Apprenticeship and JGW+ Learner Awards.

Attending the awards dinner at Parc y Scarlets were apprentices Evan Edwards, Guto Rogers and Sophie Owen who won various categories of the event.

Up against four other competitors for the Higher Apprentice of the Year Award, Euan Edwards, a construction management apprentice took the title.

Euan is employed by Morganstone Construction and is studying a higher-level apprenticeship at level five.

He started his apprenticeship without prior experience in construction management but quickly adapted to the demands of the role.

Euan has demonstrated extraordinary strength and resilience and his apprenticeship journey exemplifies the power of perseverance, proactive learning and a growth mindset.

For the Shining Star JGW+ Award, Sophie Owen won first place for her placement at a nursery where she showed impressive initiative and a strong work ethic, taking the lead in creating lesson and activity plans.

In her shortlist nomination, Sophie was said to have added value to the organisation by enhancing the educational experiences.

Sophie also achieved the equivalent of a C in both maths and English GCSE and has secured a childcare apprenticeship through her hard work and resilience and taking ownership of her learning and challenges.

Guto Rogers, who was up against competition from Pembrokeshire College and an independent training company, won the Welsh Language Award.

He is currently completing a level three apprenticeship in site carpentry and comes from a Welsh-speaking household.

Guto felt it was essential to continue his apprenticeship bilingually, not just in his apprenticeship studies, but for his professional development, working in rural communities.

There were a high number of Coleg Sir Gâr apprentices, work-based and JGW+ learners shortlisted for competition awards.

Harry Coppack, who is working in a plant nursery, was shortlisted for Shining Star JGW+ award as well as Aden James, who is currently on a hospital placement.

Gareth David, head of work-based learning at Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion said: “This event is a fantastic way to highlight the work and success of work-based learning programmes and the learners that truly excel and thrive within them.

“We are incredibly proud to see the tangible impact they are making in their workplaces.

“It’s inspiring to witness their growth and celebrate how work-based learning empowers learners to achieve their full potential.”
