We offer a variety of Painting and Decorating courses at Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion. Whether you’re just starting out or aiming to refine your skills, our practical training covers everything from basic surface preparation and paint application to advanced decorative finishes and wallpapering techniques.
You’ll learn key skills in measuring, cutting, preparing surfaces, applying coatings, and creating decorative effects – all within a supportive, industry-standard workshop environment.
These courses can lead to a wide range of career opportunities in the construction and design industries, including work as a professional painter and decorator, specialist finisher, or progression into site supervision, interior design, or self-employment.

Painting and Decorating Courses in Ammanford
Painting, Decorating and Multi-trades
This option is part of our ‘Diploma in Construction Trade Skills’ course.

This course is designed to develop your skills and knowledge, enabling you to progress into the industry of your chosen craft.
You will be taught in a purpose built training workshop which simulates real-world construction environments and allows for plenty of hands on learning.
The course is delivered by highly qualified and experienced staff using modern facilities.
All learners will complete a mandatory introduction to a health and safety unit, a variety of general industry units and trade specific units.
As part of the programme learners will also complete essential or basic literacy and numeracy development.
Opportunities will also be provided for GCSEs in Welsh, English and mathematics and for Welsh language development.

A variety of assessment methods are used which include written knowledge questions, online and practical skills tests.
This qualification is available to be assessed through the medium of Welsh and English.

GCSE grades A* to G in English or Welsh (first language) and maths or WJEC L1/2 Constructing the Built Environment or mature student. We would recommend students with GCSE grades A*-D consider applying for the Foundation in Construction and Building Services Engineering Level 2 qualification.
Applicants will also need to attend a successful interview. Applicants should also have an interest in the chosen craft and evidence of practical ability would be an advantage.

Students will be required to source and purchase their own personal protective equipment (PPE) which comprises safety boots, safety glasses, hard hat and hi-vis.
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.
You will need to provide your own stationery and there may also be additional costs if the department arranges educational visits.

Decorative finishing, Industrial Occupations and Wall and Floor Tiling.
This option is part of our ‘Foundation in Construction and Building Services Engineering Level 2’ course.

All learners will complete six mandatory units which holistically cover:
- An introduction to the construction and built environment sectors
- Employment and employability skills
- Health and safety
In addition to these units, learners will complete two trade units to spend additional time learning, which will include planning, performing and evaluating common tasks. The qualification equips learners with a broad, cross-cutting understanding of the sector, enabling them to make informed decisions about their own development.
The Foundation in Construction and Building Services Engineering (Level 2) qualification enables learners to begin to develop their:
- Understanding of the buildings and structures that constitute the built environment and how they change, and have changed over time.
- Understanding of the trades, roles and careers in the construction and built environment sector.
- Understanding of the life cycle of buildings and structures in the built environment and the associated principles and processes at each stage.
- Understanding of social, economic and environmental sustainability as appropriate to construction and the built environment.
- Knowledge of emerging technologies in the construction and built environment sector.
- Employability skills and their understanding of how these are relevant to, and important in, the workplace in the construction and built environment sector.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply the principles of working in ways which protect health, safety, well-being and the environment.
- Knowledge, skills and understanding required in planning, performing and evaluating common practical tasks in at least two trades within the construction and built environment sector.
As part of the programme learners will also complete essential or basic literacy and numeracy development. Opportunities will also be provided to take GCSEs in Welsh, English and mathematics and for Welsh language development.

To achieve this qualification, learners must complete:
- One externally set, externally marked on-screen multiple-choice test
- One externally set, internally marked practical project covering two trade areas
- One externally set, internally marked guided discussion

- GCSE grades A* to D in mathematics and English or Welsh language or
- WJEC Level 1 / 2 in constructing the built environment or
- A level one construction related qualification
- Mature learners are welcomed to apply and subject to interview

The qualification is aimed at furthering your skills prior to starting an apprenticeship.
You will be taught in a purpose built training workshop which simulates real-world construction environments and allows for plenty of hands on learning.
The course is delivered by highly qualified and experienced staff using modern facilities.
As well as your ‘trade’ units, you will also complete three ‘core’ units which cover:
- Employment
- Employability skills
- General construction practices.
As part of the programme learners will also complete essential or basic literacy and numeracy development. Opportunities will also be provided to take GCSEs in Welsh, English and mathematics and for Welsh language development.

To achieve this qualification, learners must complete:
- one externally set, externally marked multiple-choice test.
- one externally set, internally marked project covering their chosen trade area
- one externally set, internally marked oral discussion

It is suitable for learners who have achieved the Foundation in Construction and Building Services Engineering qualification but do not yet have an employer to continue to an apprenticeship.
