Have you ever wondered how stages are lit, how theatre design is created and how music and special FX is created for theatre, film or TV or are curious about a career backstage? During this course you will get hands-on experience in designing and producing such content.
This University of the Arts London (UAL) awarding body course will give you the practical skills and the technical training to pursue work in the creative industries. You will study a wide range of skills in set design, costume, lighting and sound mixing along with stage and production management.
Performing and production students are part of the college’s Cwmni Theatr Glo which operates like a professional theatre company. You will collaborate on projects in our state-of-the-art Forge theatre and have the opportunity to design and stage productions in professional theatres. Part of your course will include working with the UWTSD production team and receiving intensive workshops with industry professionals that will prepare you for a successful career in a rapidly expanding UK creative sector.

What you will learn
This is a two year course that enables you to develop your interest and knowledge of a range of design and technical disciplines. You will learn to research and reflect on your work at a high level and test your creativity by working on exciting performance projects.
Our recent projects have included making short films with BBC Wales’ It’s my Shout, as well as staging fully realised productions at the 500 seat Ffwrnes theatre in Llanelli. You will design, research and support our performance projects as part of our theatre company.
- Skills sessions - build your knowledge and creativity in a range of areas including set, lighting, sound, stage management and costume)
- Project - Practical sessions designing and producing performance projects
- Research and Context - Theory based where you explore theatre history, exciting artists and industry developments.
- Tutorial sessions- track and support your progress in the course.
All learners are also enrolled on a skills pathway for literacy and numeracy.
The course enables students to explore, design and create exciting new work alongside industry professionals. The experience you will gain through this course will prepare you for a career in backstage production and theatre design as well as TV and production.
You will be assessed on your practical and theory assignments.
At the end of this two-year course, you will achieve a UAL, Level 3 Extended Diploma in Production Arts, equivalent to three A levels.
This qualification is available to be assessed through the medium of Welsh and English.
5 GCSEs at A*-C including either maths, English or Welsh (first language)
As part of the interview process, you will be required to audition for your place on the
course for both performing and production arts. Please see the specification below.
Production
For production arts, you will be required to present one of the following:-
● A Set / Costume / Makeup / Lighting / Sound design for a show of your choosing.
● An article you have created (Prop. Costume etc)
● A portfolio or work you have completed in the past - this could be images from a
previous production you helped to run/ design etc.
You will need steel toe capped shoes/boots.
You will be required to have a black Cwmni Theatr Glo T-shirt.
£65.00 trips contribution for the year
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.
