A career in public services can be wide and varied but all services aim to work with the community and can include roles such as policing, justice and emergency call handling.

This qualification is a full-time, two-year programme of study for learners who want to focus on the uniformed protective services sector, with the aim of progressing to higher education to a related degree course or gaining employment in the uniformed protective services.

You will develop understanding and knowledge relating to government and the wider uniformed protective services sector, as well as developing the important skills needed to work in this sector, such as discipline, teamwork, communication, working with diverse groups and the ability to work collaboratively.

What you will learn

The uniformed protective services sector is diverse and encompasses services such as the police service, the fire and rescue service, the armed services and the prison service. This qualification focuses on, but is not limited to, these uniformed protective services. It will provide you with the opportunity to not only learn about the sector, but to interact with people working in these roles through a programme of guest speakers, trips, vocational fitness assessments, taster sessions and simulations which are an integral part of the course.

The course consists of 13 units which cover topics such as Citizenship and Diversity;  Behaviour and Discipline in the Uniformed Protective Services;  Global Affairs; Physical Preparation, Health and Wellbeing; Teamwork, Leadership and Communication; Government and the Protective Services; Planning for and Responding to Emergency Incidents and Criminology. 

This course also includes the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate.

The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher-education providers as meeting admission requirements for many relevant courses. Learners can progress to higher education in a range of disciplines, for example:

  • BA (Hons) in Criminology
  • BSc (Hons) in Fire and Rescue
  • BA (Hons) in Social Work
  • BA (Hons) in Sociology
  • BA (Hons) in Public Services
  • BA (Hons) in Policing
  • LLB (Hons) in Law.

This qualification is primarily designed to support progression to employment following further study at university. However, it also supports learners progressing directly to employment. It will give learners the knowledge and understanding required to apply for a range of entry-level roles within the Uniformed Protective Services sector, or for employment as an apprentice within the sector, where learners will complete additional training and qualifications to gain the skills and knowledge required to progress in their chosen profession.

There are three main forms of assessment on the course. The majority of units will be assessed internally, however two units will be assessed externally in the form of written exams (one in each year of the course). There will also be a synoptic assessment in year 2 which will give learners the opportunity to independently select and apply learning from across their programmes to complete a vocational task involving scenarios and realistic activities.  All learners who are first language Welsh and have received a Welsh Education prior to attending College are expected to complete 50% of the course through the Medium of Welsh. 

This qualification is available to be assessed through the medium of Welsh and English.

Applicants will need to have: 

A minimum of five GCSEs grades at A* - C, one of which must be English/Welsh first language or maths or successful completion of a relevant level two vocational qualification

English and maths are an integral part of the course. Students who do not yet have the necessary grades at C or above will have additional teaching and support to study for either GCSE or Essential Skills depending on prior GCSE grades.

There will be a payment required for trips and Outdoor activities . Letters will be issued to parents advising them of these costs.

Owing to the fitness requirements on the course, learners will be required to have a sports kit and also clothing and footwear suitable for wearing on expeditions.  

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.
