What you will learn

The course is designed around hands-on learning. It focuses more on practical skills and lets you demonstrate what you can do, rather than testing you on theory knowledge.

You’ll develop generic skills that will help you progress with further learning as well as subject specific skills .

Examples of units include:

  • The two mandatory core units are Skills for learning and Team Challenge - These will give you the opportunity to gain the skills they will need to show your understanding of the different subjects you learn about.
  • Other units include:
    • Managing time,
    • Problem solving by thinking creatively,
    • Communicating with people
    • Finding out about a topic.
  • Maths and English qualifications are also included in the programme.

Once you’ve completed this course you will have the confidence, skills and experience to choose a course you want to study in more depth in the future.

All units are internally assessed, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate the skills you’ve developed. There are a range of assessment styles to suit your individual needs and all units are graded to encourage your skills development and performance.

Entry onto the course depends on the outcome of a selection interview.  Entry for students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the curriculum area depending on written evidence of previous study or learning.

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25.00 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery, and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits
