Equine Learners Gain Unforgettable Experience in Holland

Six students and two staff members from Coleg Sir Gâr’s equine department travelled to Holland for a week of hands-on learning, industry insight, and cultural exploration.
Taking place from 27–31 March 2025, the educational visit was fully funded by Taith — a Welsh Government-funded programme supporting international learning experiences for learners and staff.
The group, made up of five Level 3 Year 1 students and one Level 4 apprentice, visited a number of renowned equestrian centres across the country, including veterinary practices, stallion shows, stud farms and riding schools.
For three of the students, it was their first time flying — a moment filled with both nerves and excitement. “We made sure to talk them through everything in advance,” said lecturer Sarah Wedgbury. “They all did brilliantly and were fascinated by the views from the plane window.”
The itinerary combined both professional development and personal growth, giving students the opportunity to connect their coursework with real-world practices in a different country.
“I really enjoyed learning and exploring the veterinary practice, seeing how things are done and the effort and care that goes into everything,” said learner Asha Jimpson. “I also really enjoyed both stallion shows and the show jumping — it felt so surreal and I will always be grateful to have gotten the chance to experience this.”
Zana Llewellyn, who is working towards her Level 4 qualification, added: “I was very lucky to be able to go on the Holland trip with Coleg Sir Gâr. I found the visits so interesting and relevant to our coursework. We also visited a riding school and saw the business side of things, as well as some beautiful dressage stallions ridden by the world’s top riders.”
Alongside the educational elements, learners had the chance to take in Dutch culture — sampling local dishes such as stampot and trying traditional pastries.
The trip offered a unique opportunity for students to develop both their academic and personal skills — all while experiencing a new country through the lens of their chosen profession.
