Five students in a line holding their CITB certificates

Pupils from Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi and Ysgol Bro Preseli had the opportunity of working with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) as part of their school link studies with Coleg Ceredigion.

In a fast-based and team-driven competition, the task set by the CITB was to create a strategy for a sustainable living project that reduced the environmental impact of a housing development whilst still producing sellable and attractive homes.

In this competition, which was aimed at 14- to 16-year-olds, students had two hours to develop their ideas which they had to present to a panel of judges, with a particular emphasis on realistic construction solutions and community impact.

The event was also held during Apprenticeship Week, with CITB supporting activities that promote construction careers, apprenticeships, and employer-ready skills

Pupils from the school were involved as part of their weekly studies at Coleg Ceredigion’s Cardigan campus where year 10s and 11s follow a WJEC constructing the built environment course.

Neil Perry Evans, Coleg Ceredigion construction lecturer said: “The competition teams explored ideas around energy efficiency, materials, waste reduction, transport, and overall green living principles.

“The challenge encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, quick decision-making, and confidence in presenting technical ideas, which are all skills directly linked to the construction industry.

“CITB’s involvement helps learners understand the breadth of opportunities within construction, highlights sustainability as a growing industry priority, and shows clear progression routes into apprenticeships and employment.

“It was great to see such strong engagement from both schools, with learners producing thoughtful, well-considered ideas under time pressure.”
