Creative media students at Coleg Sir Gâr are getting industry experience working with a range of local companies helping them produce content for their social media business platforms.

There are 10 groups of students working with different companies in a project that stemmed from the college’s film and production club.

The film and production cub is held every Wednesday afternoon during students free time, which is allocated to every student to pursue their own interests or sports.

Local companies include, amongst others, a hairdresser, barbers, an entertainments and food venue and a meal preparation company.

The college’s production club is an addition to its weekly film club and it is a non-assessed activity, allowing students the freedom to explore ideas and development as an addition to their course.

Rhydian Bowen, lecturer in creative media at Coleg Sir Gâr said: “We asked students to approach various companies across a broad range of sectors and it’s great we’ve had such a positive response.

“It’s helped students further develop their practical and creative skills as well as offering them experience in being focussed on the needs of the clients as well as the creative journey.

“Students have full access to the college’s industry standard media facilities and software such as DSLR video cameras, broadcast sound equipment, Apple Macs, Adobe and animation suites.”

Osian Everett, Coleg Sir Gâr creative media student said: “I got the chance to collaborate with a local company in Llanelli as a part of the college’s Production Club, and I decided on LeanKitchen, a meal prep business that uses social media to advertise its goods.

“I was tasked with making a quick video for Instagram and TikTok that demonstrated how they work.

“It was a great opportunity to work with a genuine client because it forced me to consider their objectives, stick to deadlines, and modify my filmmaking technique to fit their vision.

“In addition to helping me improve my teamwork, planning, and communication skills—all of which are critical in the field - this project also taught me how to follow a client’s brief, which is a useful skill for the future.”

A representative from Lean Kitchen said: “It was a real pleasure working with the college on our promotional video.

“The group brought a fresh, creative perspective to the project and approached everything with professionalism and enthusiasm.

“Their passion for media really came through in the final product, and it was great to see how well they understood our brand and message.

“Supporting local talent not only adds value to our business, but also gives students the chance to gain real world experience.”
