A Coleg Sir Gâr lecturer has been named as a finalist in the Educator of the Year category in the NCFE 2025 Aspirations Awards.

Rob Kirk, who is a lecturer in sport and sports science at the college’s Graig campus, was nominated for his exceptional dedication to teaching and bespoke approach in helping students to succeed.

His passion for improving both academic and physical performance inspires learners and colleagues alike.

He shows unwavering support for learners facing challenges and produces results that are transformative.

His personalised approach ensures every student’s needs are met, going the extra mile to provide tailored help so that no one is left behind.

For example, Rob developed a bespoke course alongside the college’s sports science provision for an outdoor activities student transferring from another college, showcasing his commitment to ensuring success for all.

For an elite performer with autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia and scoliosis, Rob designed custom tracking sessions and collaborated with support teams to provide the flexibility needed to compete while excelling academically. This effort led to the learner achieving a distinction grade on a Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity (SES).

Rob also supported a learner with complex neurodivergent needs, including autism and ADHD, by liaising closely with their family and creating a supportive environment.

This trust enabled the learner, previously unsuccessful in a level three course, to earn a merit grade on an extended diploma and progress to higher education.

Through one-on-one support meetings, Rob helped an introverted autistic learner build confidence and actively participate in group activities. Her transformation into a class representative and achievement of a distinction-star grade, demonstrates Rob’s impact on fostering self-belief and determination.

Even in challenging circumstances, Rob ensures learners succeed. After a student underwent emergency surgery and missed six weeks of college, Rob provided regular remote sessions to keep the learner on track, enabling him to achieve his goals.

Rob’s innovation in the sports department has significantly enhanced the learning experience. Securing funding, he established a cutting-edge sports science lab featuring the following: Cortex VO2 max analysis machine; Hypoxic altitude chamber; Force distribution biomechanic plate; Tanita body mass analyser; Hudl sports coach analysis suite and a Wattbike suite.

As part of the college’s Digital Development Group and Innovative Use of Technology working group, Rob secured digital innovation grants to enrich resources even further.

Rob spearheaded the Elite Performer Programme, supporting 15 learners across 12 sports, including world-class athletes such as Emma Finucane, an Olympic cycling champion, Amy Cole, a world record tandem cyclist), and Liam Lloyd, a Commonwealth triathlete.

His mentoring balances academic and athletic development, fostering success.

Kim Nicholas, Coleg Sir Gâr head of section, who nominated Rob, said: “Rob’s dedication to teaching has shined a light in the lives of many students who have truly benefited from his passion for progression.

“Beyond academics, Rob also promotes a positive departmental culture, which include morale-boosting initiatives.

“He also organised a South African rugby tour for 31 players and is planning a 2026 Canada tour for 60 to 70 athletes across rugby and netball, understanding the life-changing value of such experiences.

“His dedication ensures all students receive exceptional education, embodying the spirit of the NCFE Educator of the Year and we wish him every success as a well-deserved finalist of this award.”
