School pupils’ Welsh language taster

Pupils from Llanelli secondary schools took part in Welsh language workshops at Coleg Sir Gâr to give them a taste of studying Welsh at A-level.
The Hybu Cymraeg Lefel-A event, was organised by Welsh language tutor Philippa Smith, who invited external organisations Partneriaeth and Swansea University to facilitate some of the workshops and streamed through a live link to Stephen Rule, otherwise known as Dr Cymraeg.
Schools that took part were Bryngwyn, Coedcae, St John Lloyd and Glan-y-Môr.
The pupils had the opportunity to go to three different sessions, one of which was run by Dyfed Williams from Partneriaeth where pupils had to use their Welsh to answer questions and play games in order to find their way out of the room – a fusion of Escape Room meets Task Master.
Miriam Jones and Hannah Sams from the Department of Welsh at Swansea University, facilitated a session on poetry, which is part of the AS Welsh course and to offer a taste of life at the university.
Coleg Sir Gâr staff and students delivered the third session, which was sharing opportunities of using the Welsh language at college followed by a ‘Chwalu’r Chwedlau’ quiz (myth busting) and held a FAQ session about studying A-Level Welsh.
Doctor Cymraeg, speaking live from Ysgol Maelor in Wrexham, talked about his experiences with the language and included some light-heated entertaining facts about the Welsh language.
Coleg Sir Gâr lecturer Philippa Smith, said: “A massive heartfelt thank you to all the contributors and to the schools for supporting this event.
“Welsh A-level is very different to GCSE so we wanted to give pupils a taste of studying Welsh at college.”
