The A-level and Access team at Coleg Sir Gâr welcomed former students to a celebration which congratulated them on their college achievements and recognised their success with college awards.

Both A-level and Access courses help people to achieve their goals to study at university or in higher apprenticeships to achieve their career goals.

Erin McCarthy, who is now studying law at Cambridge, was presented with an outstanding achievement in A-levels award, presented by vice principal, Amanda Daniels.

Matt Hays, who studied an Access course in humanities and social sciences is now studying journalism at University of Winchester. He achieved one of the highest-grade profiles on the course last year despite facing a challenging time in his personal life which nearly saw him withdrawing from the course; but with tutor support, he successfully achieved his goal.

George Glennister scooped all three awards for chemistry, further maths and physics. He also won an Outstanding Achievement in A-levels award. His chemistry lecturer recognised his outstanding chemical curiosity, strong analytical and deductive abilities and general enthusiasm in the laboratory.

The event also saw the return of award-winner Eunsuk Seo, who studied an Access to healthcare course and is now reaping her rewards at Swansea University where she is studying a nursing degree which specialises in learning disabilities.

Jamie Perks, who started college with a vision for his future but wasn’t sure how to achieve it, was also presented with an Access Prize for Outstanding Effort and is now studying a psychology degree at Swansea University.

Former A-level student Hannah Freckleton sent her tutors a video from Cost Rica which was played at the awards event. Hannah received exceptional grades and was offered a fully-funded psychology degree at Princeton University in America which included a gap year placement. She is currently in Costa Rica, staying with a host family, learning Spanish and is teaching English at a local primary school.

Angharad Mansfield, head of A levels speaking

Angharad Mansfield, head of A-levels and Sir Gâr 6 at Coleg Sir Gâr said: “This is one of our favourite events in the faculty calendar; celebrating the success of our students and sharing the celebrations with their families and friends.

“Last year was a very successful year for Sir Gar 6 as we were awarded the Alps Gold Award which puts the college in the top 25% performing schools and colleges for A-levels in England and Wales.

“This is very much down to the hard work of our students and lecturers and the working relationships built with lecturers, which has been an enormous contributor to this success.

“At this end of year celebration, I’d also like to thank all the staff on our team for their continued support and dedication to achieving the very best outcomes for our students.”

The college would like to thank Mark Jennings from Carmarthenshire Music Service for leading our A-level music students in the musical accompaniment which welcomed guests to the event.
