Talent4Tech: Connecting students with tech leaders
Coleg Sir Gâr students visited the Talent4Tech, Wales’ ultimate tech career event at the ICC in Cardiff where they were able to connect with exhibitors and employers such as Cyber Resilience Centre for Wales, the BBC and The Royal Academy of Engineering.
During Wales Tech Week, students on A-level and AS computer science and digital technology courses attended along with their vocational peers, on a level three extended diploma programme.
Talent4Tech is a place to explore tech in its infinity, from the tech-curious to leaders in the field, the event encourages students from every background to visit, because tech doesn’t just exist across one sector.
Nearly 20 students who are studying at the college’s Graig campus in Llanelli attended and took part in two Talent4Tech panel sessions where one session focused on getting into cyber security careers and the other facilitated a Q&A to help students uncover the depth of IT-related career roles.
Amongst the exhibitors were de Novo Solutions, a gold partner of Wales Tech Week, who showcased digital transformation and cloud-focussed solutions.
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) also engaged with students and discussed recruitment into roles across areas such as cloud computing and cyber security.
Sony UK Tec offered insight into high-tech manufacturing and engineering roles and encouraged students to explore pathways into careers within Sony’s technology operation.
They joined other employers such as Thales, who contributed to cybersecurity and defence-tech discussions for roles in national security, digital defence systems and cyber roles.
Rebecca Clarke, A-level lecturer at Coleg Sir Gâr said: “We felt it was important to take our learners to this event so they could engage with key representatives and employers in the industry, to help encourage them into developing their own aspiring careers.
“The event showcased the vastness of the industry’s development and employment opportunities in this fast-moving sector as well as highlighting various other sectors that technology crosses over, such as health and manufacturing.”
Matthew James, acting head of computing at Coleg Sir Gâr said: “The Talent4Tech trip allowed our students to go beyond the classroom and experience real innovation in action. They returned feeling more confident, with clearer goals, and a true excitement for what technology can do in their future. It’s wonderful to see their enthusiasm and growth.”
