As part of Coleg Sir Gâr’s Medical Field Programme, students recently visited Swansea University to take part in a biomedical science session.

The visit included hands-on laboratory work in microbiology and immunology, testing blood samples using a specific culture created by the university.

Students were also given information on career opportunities and information on studying a degree in biomedical science.

The Medical Field Programme, in partnership with Swansea University, is aimed at students who want to explore outside of the traditional doctor role and look at careers including biochemistry, psychology, audiology, genetics, radiography and theatre.

Bethan Craig, a Coleg Sir Gâr A-level student said: “I thought the trip was an eye-opening experience as I learned new things and a whole new subject within the health industry that I never even knew existed.

“I enjoyed learning new things about the subject, as well as exploring a subject that is new to me.

“I felt that the trip was extremely beneficial as I was able to discover a completely new career path which I never knew existed before, which has also made me interested in learning more about.”

Oliwia Drobnica, BTEC applied science student said: “I personally found the experience to be very informative and fun as I was required to test blood types which was a new experience.

“It gave me a new perspective on the specific medical area and allowed me to gain interest in it.

“It was also useful for my university personal statement as it gives me something extra about my studies and college experience to discuss.”
