Gwili Jones and John Hancock awards success for trailer brake project
Coleg Sir Gâr agricultural engineering student Dylan Vaughan is the recipient of this year’s Gwili Jones Commercial Award and John Hancock Award.
Dylan, 18, from Trecastle, designed and manufactured electric trailer brakes to overcome a problem he has experienced himself, whilst working on his family’s beef and sheep farm.
Every agricultural engineering student on the level three course competes every year in the Gwili Jones and John Hancock awards, where they formally present their ideas at the college’s agricultural Gelli Aur campus.
Students are asked to come up with four ideas for either a new product or for a product improvement and then choose one to further explore and manufacture.
Dylan’s presentation was comprehensive with detailed findings presenting detailed research and engineering calculations, including wire and relay sizing, programming, voltage drops and a final engineering specification.
Student also submit their designs for the annual IAgrE awards and have achieved continuous success at the awards year after year.
Rhys James, agricultural engineering lecturer at Coleg Sir Gâr, said: “A huge well done to Dylan for this well-deserved recognition of his engineering and manufacturing abilities from both Gwili Jones and John Hancock.
“We are incredibly proud of all our students who step up to present their ideas and self-manufactured projects to industry experts.”
