Horticulture student set to start traineeship at Aberglasney Gardens

Coleg Sir Gâr horticulture student Tom Jenkins will be starting a year-long trainee position at Aberglasney Gardens in September.

The horticulture bursary is a 12-month funded learning and training opportunity at Aberglasney Gardens and selected students gain a full year’s experience at Aberglasney’s historic and diverse garden.

Accredited by the Royal Horticulture Society (RHS), Tom, 21, has been studying a level two Certificate in Practical Horticulture and the Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth and Development at Coleg Sir Gâr.

Horticulture was a natural choice for Tom as he always enjoyed being outdoors, helping in the garden and he had a particular interest in how plants grow and how green spaces can be designed and maintained. 

Tom Jenkins said: “What I enjoy most about the course is the balance between theory and practical work. 

“It is rewarding to learn something in the classroom and then apply it directly in the garden at Aberglasney.”

“The course has helped me develop a wide range of practical skills, including plant identification, propagation, pruning, soil management, and the safe use of horticultural machinery and equipment. 

“One skill I didn’t expect to enjoy and learn so much about was plant propagation. It has been fascinating to learn different propagation techniques, such as taking cuttings, seed sowing, and division, and to see plants successfully grow and develop from these methods.”

During the course, Tom was successful in achieving a part-time position in the nursery at National Botanical Garden of Wales, which he says has been a fantastic opportunity to support and complement his studies. 

Tom Jenkins added: “The role has allowed me to gain valuable hands-on experience and develop my practical skills in a professional horticultural environment. 

“Following the completion of my course, I have secured a year-long trainee position at Aberglasney Gardens starting in September where I am looking forward to building on the knowledge and experience, I have gained during my studies, and continuing to develop my skills alongside experienced horticulturists.”
