Keal Davies has always been passionate about farming, so much so, that he decided to study agriculture, despite coming from a non-farming background.

This is a move that the college’s agricultural team supports and nurtures alongside its cohort of seasoned agriculturalists.

In his own words, Keal says that despite having a passion for farming, he took the ‘safe’ option and signed-up to be a plumber, but the longing to work in agriculture never left him.

The catalyst for change came when Keal saw an advert to explore the college course which he did and says he’s never looked back since.

Keal Davies said: “This is the best thing I ever did. I never thought I’d ever graduate; I thought it was too late for me, so I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone at Gelli Aur, including the tutors and everyone in my class.”

“Growing up, I’ve always loved animals and learning where our food comes from. Caring for livestock and the environment has been a lifelong ambition, and thanks to the staff at Gelli Aur campus, they saw potential in me and pushed me to be my best.

“Studying at Gelli Aur has been amazing, they have encouraged me to take every opportunity and I couldn’t have done it without them; I’ve learned so much and the people there have been the best.”

Elizabeth Bowes, head of agriculture at Coleg Sir Gâr and Coleg Ceredigion said: “Keal’s journey is exactly what Gelli Aur is all about – creating opportunities and helping learners realise their potential.

“Starting with us on our level one agriculture programme without a traditional farming background, Keal has shown that dedication, hard work and a passion for learning can overcome any barrier.

“Graduating with an agriculture degree is an outstanding achievement and demonstrates that agriculture is open to everyone.

“Keal’s success is an inspiration to future learners and a wonderful example of what can be achieved when ambition is matched with opportunity and support.

“We are incredibly proud of everything he has accomplished and look forward to seeing where his career in agriculture takes him next.”

With a particular interest in genetics, Keal is now looking forward to exploring the many opportunities available within the diverse and evolving world of agriculture.
