The Access to Counselling & Social Care Diploma is an excellent pathway to a career in counselling, social policy, psychology, social work, youth work or other social care related degree courses.
This course involves three days of lectures a week. As well as subject knowledge, you will learn the academic research and presentation skills that will give you the strong foundation you need to move on to degree level study.
An Access course requires commitment, an ability to meet strict deadlines and a determination to complete independent study. You will need to be flexible with your work and family commitments and will be asked how you will manage this at interview stage.
There are advisors who can help with applications for financial or academic support for those students who need it.

What you will learn
Achieving the Access Diploma is not based upon passing an examination but on continuous assessment and the course is assessed through a variety of assignments.
The course benefits from a range of interesting topic areas taught by well qualified, supportive and enthusiastic staff.
In addition to these, separate lessons are timetabled to build the skills of communication and numeracy up to the required standard for university entry.
Support, guidance and regular feedback provided in personal tutorials to encourage and motivate students who may initially lack confidence in the classroom.

You will study a range of Level 3 modules including:
- Healthcare
- Counselling
- Social Policy
- Psychology
- Sociology
- The Investigative Project
Additionally, you will study core skills that will prepare you for study at university:
- Academic skills
- Numeracy
Tutorial sessions support learners and offer guidance with the UCAS process and study skills.
Each module will be assessed through a range of methods, including:
- Essays
- Presentations
- Time-Constrained Assessments
- Open book
- Academic posters
- Case studies
- Practical exercises
- Reports
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.
You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
- All applicants must be aged 19 or over on the day the course starts.
- Grade C or above in GCSE Mathematics and English Language.
- All applicants are subject to a formal interview and basic literacy and numeracy tests.
- A commitment to study a full-time
- A mature, dedicated and resilient attitude is essential, and a minimum of 90% attendance each term is expected from all students.
- Applicants need a clear idea of the degree level course they wish to apply for in future
- Applicants without the relevant qualifications, or equivalents, will be directed to an appropriate Level 2 course in order to achieve the required skills to allow them to progress onto the Diploma. You will be given guidance and advice at interview.
