FdA Children, Young People and Society

The Foundation Degree in Children, Young People and Society is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and professional values you need for working with children, young people and families. The combination of academic study and practical experience will prepare you to work in a range of social care, education and youth work settings.

The course focuses on developing reflective practitioners who can apply theoretical knowledge to real-world practice. It encourages you  to explore policies, legislation and professional frameworks that influence services for children and young people in Wales. The programme also promotes personal growth, ethical understanding and effective teamwork within multidisciplinary environments.

What you will learn

Completion of work/voluntary experience in child or social care settings that help students to make informed career choices. 

A variety of guest speakers for a variety of child or social care settings provide a wealth of knowledge, experience and recruitment opportunities. 

No examinations - assessment is by completion of assignments throughout each year. Many opportunities to develop initiative, and group working skills. 

Student support is available ranging from learning support for study skills, through to financial advice and personal counselling.

A small friendly staff team and small student groups of around 15-30 people.

This course prepares you for careers working with children, young people and families in areas such as:

  • Education support roles
  • Youth work
  • Social care
  • Family support services
  • Community and voluntary organisations

You could also progress on to further higher education study, such as a Level 6 (Bachelor’s degree) in related subjects including social care, youth work, education or childhood studies.

Assessment methods vary between modules and may include:

  • Coursework and essays
  • Presentations
  • Portfolios
  • Practical assessments (such as videos or presentations)
  • Placement-based assessments

All written work is normally submitted electronically through Turnitin.

Typical entry requirements include:

  • Relevant Level 3 qualification (e.g., A-levels, BTEC, Access to HE or equivalent)
  • Interest or experience in working with children or young people
  • Enhanced DBS check due to working with children or vulnerable individuals during the programme.
