What is the Seren Pathway?
The Seren Pathway at Sir Gar 6 is a highly competitive academic pathway designed for high-achieving students who are aspiring to progress to top UK and international universities.
If you join the pathway, you will follow a distinct tutorial programme that places a strong emphasis on super-curricular engagement — activities designed to deepen subject knowledge, develop intellectual curiosity, and prepare you for university-level study.
You will work closely with the Seren Network, giving you access to a wide range of enrichment opportunities and academic experiences. Through this network, you will benefit from partnerships with several prestigious institutions, including:
- The Lucy Cavendish Programme at the University of Cambridge
- Step Up to New College at the University of Oxford
- Pathways to Bath and Pathways to Bristol
- National initiatives run by the Sutton Trust
These opportunities are designed to strengthen your academic profile and help you prepare effectively for progression to highly competitive universities.
What will you do on the Seren Pathway?
As a Seren Pathway student, you will become part of a dedicated tutorial group, led by a specialist Pathway tutor. Your tutor will deliver a tailor-made programme designed to support you in realising and fulfilling your academic potential.
You will take part in weekly timetabled sessions, where you will be supported in developing into an aspirational, high-achieving and resilient young adult. These sessions reflect the style and expectations of university learning and are designed to challenge you academically.
Sessions are delivered by your personal tutor, alongside selected guest speakers and former Seren students, who will guide you through a range of authentic “university-style” experiences.
Throughout the programme, you will develop essential higher-order academic skills, including:
- Research methodologies
- Critical and analytical thinking
- Academic discussion and debate
- Confidence, independence, and communication skills
You will also take part in dedicated university preparation sessions, where you will receive focused support with:
- Choosing the right university and course
- Writing a strong personal statement
- Preparing the best possible UCAS application
- Understanding the expectations of competitive universities
By the end of the programme, you will be well prepared to make ambitious, informed choices about your future and to apply confidently to some of the most competitive universities in the UK and beyond.
Entry requirements
Entry to the Seren Pathway at Sir Gar 6 is highly competitive and limited to the top 20 academic profiles in each year’s intake. This typically means achieving six A* grades at GCSE. Places are offered based on academic performance.

Alps Gold Award for college A-level team
Coleg Sir Gâr’s A-level Sir Gâr 6 team has been awarded the Alps Gold Award which puts the college in the top 25% performing schools and colleges for A-levels in England and Wales.
A Coleg Sir Gâr A-level student is preparing to study in the USA following an acceptance to study liberal arts at Princeton University.
Hannah Freckleton has fully embraced her college experience, successfully gaining Student Union President status and representing the college as an ambassador.
An awards event has been held at Coleg Sir Gâr to recognise the academic and personal achievement of students who followed A-level and access programmes to accomplish their future career goals of studying at university, gaining a higher apprenticeship or going into employment.
