Creative media is a highly creative and technical subject which allows you to broaden your creativity and create highly engaging and creative content.

The course is awarded by University of the Arts London (UAL) and is ideal if you want to further your experience of creative media production and build a portfolio that reflects your accomplishments, skills, experiences and attributes to display your best practical work.

You will gain practical skills in digital media production and technology as well as the knowledge and understanding necessary to progress to further study at level three creative media production and training in a range of media related subjects, including games design, film, TV, radio, sound engineering and others. This course allows your passion and interest in media in often a specific discipline to explore and extend your interest in a full time, immersive learning experience using the latest digital techniques.

What you will learn

This course focuses on providing you with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to a level three creative media production and ultimately employment. You will have the opportunity to develop these skills through contributing and experimenting to new ideas as well as being introduced to a range of activities that will inspire and innovative you in developing and creating a digital media final project.

We have fully equipped computer suites, where you will find the latest software and state of the art technology, whilst our onsite recording rooms and film studio host industry standard and professional DSLR cameras.

Our creative and digital media department has strong connections right across the industry, so you will benefit from industry specialists and networking opportunities and could have the chance to enter and win national film and television awards as well as being part of our award winning ‘Film Club’.

The level two creative media production course consists of nine units, which cover for example:

  • Introduction to creative media methods and skills
  • Exploring audio production and technology
  • Understanding an audience in creative media production.

This course also includes either the Welsh Baccalaureate National (Post-16) or Essential Skills plus a Welsh language unit and Employability Skills.

In a subject area that covers an incredible range of topics and disciplines from animation to photography to directing videos and designing video games, you will never be stuck for a choice in a future career.

This is an extremely exciting time for the creative media industry within Wales leading to job opportunities on our doorstep with the Yr Egin in Carmarthen and the BBC studios Cardiff. Successful completion of the course will enable you to progress to higher-level courses such as the level two creative media production programme, and provides transferable skills, which can lead to training in a wide variety of occupations.

Units are assessed internally. You will also create a final major project of your choice.

This qualification is available to be assessed through the medium of Welsh and English.

All applicants will need to bring a portfolio of media or art and design work to their interview.

Suitability for this course will be assessed at interview.

An applicant for the level two will need to have a minimum of four GCSEs at grades A*- C with one being either maths or English. Students who do not yet have the necessary grades at C or above will have additional teaching and support to study for either GCSE or Essential Skills depending on prior GCSE grades.

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
