Sociology is the study of people, society, and the forces that shape the world around us. Sociology encourages you to ask important questions. Why do people behave differently in groups? Why does inequality exist? How does society change over time? 

Sociology is everywhere. Everything you study directly connects to the world around you, making this subject a very exciting and fascinating experience. This course will also allow you to develop a multitude of academic skills, including critical thinking, problem-solving, debate and essay writing. 

Offering an understanding of people and society is valuable in every sector of employment. If you are curious about the world around you, Sociology is the subject for you.

AS Level

  • Unit 1 (Acquiring Culture, Sociology of the family),
  • Unit 2 (Sociological research methods, Sociology of Education)

A Level

  • Unit 3 (Sociology of Crime and Deviance),
  • Unit 4 (Applied Research Methods, Social Inequality)

Sociology is a very valuable subject for entry to higher education, with many universities offering degrees in a variety of social sciences. A wide range of career options link with Sociology, including social work, education, the Criminal Justice System, Business and marketing, media and communication, research, to name but a few.

This is an exam-based course.

An external exam will be sat on each unit.

AS exams (Unit 1 and Unit 2) are sat at the end of the first year.

A2 exams (Unit 3 and Unit 4) are sat at the end of the second year.

A minimum of six GCSEs at grades A*-C . To include:

  • GCSE English Language at grade B or above
  • GCSE Mathematics at grade C or above

Suitability for the course will be assessed at interview and throughout the induction period.

All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.

You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
