This course provides nationally recognised training for Computing and IT practitioners employed in systems support, analysis and design, software testing, network administration and many other IT related fields.
It provides a recognised progression route to higher education such as studying a HNC/D or degree in computing or associated subjects. You will receive a sound underpinning knowledge of computer theory with practical application and IT skills.

What you will learn
This course provides a broad base of current computing knowledge and applications required in industry.
You can study 60 to 180 credits, from certificate level to the full extended diploma over one to two years.
It is assessed through exams, controlled assessments and coursework; and is suitable for 16 to 19 year old students wishing to work in the computing and IT field or progress to university level.
Successful completion of year one results in a Foundation Diploma in Computing plus a Welsh Baccalaureate. You can then progress to year two to qualify for an Extended Diploma in Computing plus a Diploma in IT.
Modules will include knowledge on:
- Principles of computer science
- Fundamentals of computer systems
- Planning and management of computer projects
- Software design and development project
- IT systems security and encryption
- Website development
- And more IT related topics
This course provides a broad base of computing knowledge and applications for learners wishing to enter a career as a Computing/IT practitioner or technician in the area of computer systems, software development, networking, spreadsheet modelling, information systems, website production and digital graphics.
The qualification also provides opportunities to progress to higher education qualifications.
- Two written exams (units 1 and 2)

5 GCSEs A-C grade, including C grades in English & Maths.
All learners are required to pay an administration fee of £25 prior to enrolment.
You will need to provide your own stationery and may also incur costs if the department arranges educational visits.
