Entry requirements
You will gain hands-on experience in real work environments while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. The programme covers first and second fix carpentry, structural carcassing, health and safety, planning and reviewing your work, and sustainable construction practices. You will also develop essential workplace skills, including communication, problem-solving, and digital skills. Employers benefit from developing skilled staff trained to industry standards.
This apprenticeship can lead you to a career as a Site Carpenter or Bench Joiner, or you can progress into supervisory roles as your experience grows. On completion, you may advance to a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Carpentry or related higher-level construction pathways. It provides you with a strong route into long-term employment and career progression within the construction sector.
You will engage in practical and knowledge-based learning, covering workplace practices in Wales, health and safety, first fix and second fix carpentry, structural carcassing, planning and reviewing your work, and sustainable construction methods. You will develop occupational competence through on- and off-the-job training, supported by employer-led experience and college delivery.
You will be assessed through practical projects, an on-screen knowledge assessment, workplace evidence, and ongoing reviews of your skills development. Your competence and technical understanding will be measured against industry standards.
You may need personal protective equipment and basic tools, depending on your employer’s arrangements. Any additional costs will be discussed at the start of the programme, with many employers supporting these requirements.
You must be aged 16 or over and employed in a relevant carpentry role. This programme is ideal for you if you are starting out in the trade and want to develop your skills through employment.
GCSEs in English, Mathematics, and a technical subject are desirable, and you should demonstrate enthusiasm for construction and a commitment to developing in the sector.
